The Twin Arch houses. Est. 1974 and 1976
In the mid 70’s Jerry Gloor and his partner Claudio began the building of two homes that were identical. The properties were not close to one another, but both shared an ocean view. Jerry owned much property in the Pines and would hire a plane to fly over to document the growing Pines community and his multiple properties.
The Fire Island Beach Taxi
Before the Water Taxi on Fire Island there was the Beach Taxi. On the deserted beaches of the growing communities the rebuilt truck or utility vehicle would take people to church, the general store or from one community to another.
Fire Island DJ Mike Borowski
We like to think of DJ Mike Borowski as SuperDJ. Mike runs from NYC to the Pines in a 24 hour period, and does not miss a beat. Literally! From his infectious smile and attitude, to the love he spreads through his music DJ Mike Borowski has become a fixture in the Pines.
Fire Island Pines People- Leonard Frey
Leonard Frey was an actor who spent time here in the Pines. He originally wanted to become an artist, but in college he became interested in acting. He made his stage debut in an off-Broadway production of “Little Mary Sunshine” and his film debut as a celebrant in Passages from James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake (1966), but he first rose to prominence in the role of Harold, the self-proclaimed “Jew fairy”, in both the stage and screen versions of The Boys in the Band (1970). Written by playwright Mart Crowley who also spent time here.
The Octagon House Est. 1966
Architect Earl Combs chose the octagon shape for his own home in the Pines because its geometric shape appealed to him esthetically. There were practical advantages such as the form is well braced against strong winds; being close to a circle. It provides a great deal of living space ( eight rooms and two baths.) On a high sloping plot 70′ x 100′. The cost at the time to build the house only was $30,00 including a lot of built in furniture.
Fire Island Art history- Jim French
Jim French was an American illustrator and photographer who created the male erotic photography studio Colt Studio, as well as its two predecessors, Arion Studio and The Loger Studio. He was another creative who spent time on Fire Island.
Fire Island Pines People - Alan Brockman 1931-2004
Alan Brockman was a longtime former president of FIPPOA (Fire Island Pines Property owners Association). Under Brockman’s leadership, FIPPOA experienced a sustained period of growth and evolution and Fire Island Pines was largely defined as the community we know today.

Meryl Meisler is an American photographer. In the 1970s she photographed in New York City nightclubs and in the 1980s she photographed residents of Bushwick, Brooklyn, while working as a public school teacher there. She also frequented Fire Island where she photographed and captured the era of the 1970’s.
Night & Day 2 Benefit 1992
As the 1990’s began the need for benefits for the growing AIDS crisis became important in the Pines community. This one given by John Francis and John Gilliam. They were known as the Boulevard Boys, and played a role in benefits both in the Pines and NYC.

On May 4, 1910, the US Senate passed Act S.1119 and forwarded it to President Taft for signature. It was the end of a 7-year nightmare for Major Carrington and the conclusion of his military career. On Saturday September 8th, 2018 FIPHPS held their 3rd annual end of season event with the advance screening of the new film by Matt Tyrnauer “Studio 54 The Documentary.” Also included was the exhibit of 1970 aerials “Where Ocean meets Sky.” The event sold out making it the largest attended event at Whyte Hall.
