Pines Profile - Gil Neary 1957-2024
Gil Neary was one of the Pines’ most beloved. His life was defined by joy, generosity, and unapologetic pride. A visionary real estate broker and community builder, he helped shape Fire Island Pines into the vibrant haven it is today through his warmth, charisma, and boundless embrace of people. He championed gay life and culture with unashamed exuberance, celebrating every moment to the fullest. There is no doubt, Gil made the world brighter, bolder, and better.

Hal Rubenstein is a rare talent. His career stands as proof of what’s possible when ability meets opportunity and courage. The Pines Conservation Society (Est. 1962)
One of the most striking things about Fire Island Pines is its natural beauty. A community embedded amongst a lush haven of trees, flowers, and dunes, with pristine beaches and surrounded by wildlife, for many it’s nothing short of paradise.
But paradise doesn’t just happen. For decades, generations of residents have poured their time, love, and resources into keeping the Pines as breathtaking as it is today. Among the heroes leading that charge is the Pines Conservation Society, whose quiet, tireless work has helped preserve and protect this special place.
Memoirs of a Dockmaster
The harbor is one of the Pines’ most distinctive features. In the late 1980s it was its own kind of theater-- a floating stage where yachts, ferries, and seaplanes carried an ever-changing cast of characters, ranging from celebrities like Madonna, Peter Allen, and Liza Minnelli to foreign dignitaries guarded by men with Uzis to hundreds of drag queens arriving in full regalia for the July 4th Invasion. Henderson Rose was a dockmaster from 1986 to 1990 and had a front row seat to it all. From chatting with Tony Randall on the docks to sipping cocktails with Joan Rivers and helping to keep order as throngs of revelers flowed between Tea, house parties, and the Pavilion, his memories of those summers are as fresh as if they happened yesterday.

In the 1970’s Fashion came to the Pines in many forms, and with that came the models. Most famously among them was model Pat Cleveland. Not only for her beauty, but for involvement in the community fashion shows.
Fire Island Art history -George Stavrinos
Many artists made their way to the Pines leaving their mark on history with their art. George Stavrinos is one. An incredible talented artist whose gift was fashion illustration.
Art history-Rodger Duncan
Many artists of every creative field made their way to the Pines. It’s natural setting was a haven that inspired creativity. It was only natural that they would give back to the community using their art, and so is the case with fashion illustrator Rodger Duncan. In 1989 he created the “Fashion of the Pines” poster art for the show.
